One of the greatest storytellers, Belfast-born, Terry George (Hotel Rwanda, Some Mother’s Son) returns with a haunting tale of loss and revenge. The film focuses on the difficult paths taken by two fathers in the wake of overwhelming tragedy in their lives brought about by a late-night accident at the side of a deserted town road. It features stunning, moving performances by Mark Ruffalo and Joaquin Phoenix, two of contemporary American cinema’s most engaging and daring actors. They are ably supported by wonderfully nuanced work from Jennifer Connelly and Mira Sorvino.

The film starts gently, as two families spend a weekend evening doing family activities. Ethan and Grace Learner (Phoenix and Connelly) attend their son’s lakeside concert, while divorced dad Dwight Arno (Ruffalo) and his son catch the ball game. The families climb into their respective cars and set off home, but something tells us that tragedy is about to strike. The ball game went into extra innings, so an agitated Dwight races his son home to assuage as best he can his ex-wife (Sorvino), explaining the situation to her on his cell phone. The Learners have a more relaxed drive, their main concern being the welfare of the fireflies their children have caught in a bottle. These voyages intersect in a horrible split second, resulting in the death of a child and two very changed men – one wracked with guilt, the other destroyed by grief.
Ethan, angered that he can’t get any help from authorities in tracking down the killer of his son, decides to take matters into his own hands. What ensues is a game of cat and mouse, as one man searches for the hit-and-run driver who destroyed his family, while the other desperately attempts to cover his tracks. As Dwight’s remorse propels him on a journey toward doing the right thing, Ethan’s unbearable sadness morphs into something darker, compelling him to take radical action.
Reservation Road is a showcase of some of the world’s finest acting talents. Part tearjerker, part vigilante film, it probes our own inner conscience, asking what we might do if faced with impossible moral choices. Toronto International Film Festival

P2 is a suspense-thriller about a young businesswoman who is trapped and pursued by a psychopath in level 2 parking garage. It is produced by Alexandre Aja (“High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes”) who also shares the writing/screenplay credits..

Most people who have been alone in a parking garage have probably felt vulnerable to an attacker amidst the silence of the cold concrete walls, but what would you do if your assailant were the attendant? That’s the question posed by P2, which fits into that sub-genre of thrillers that unfold in one primary location (think Mario Bava’s KIDNAPPED, PHONE BOOTH, or WIND CHILL). The script, co-written by Alexandre Aja (THE HILLS HAVE EYES, HIGH TENSION), Franck Khalfoun, and Gregory Levasseur, offers a basic cat-and-mouse tale with a couple of jolts of bone-rattling gore. It’s Christmas Eve, and young New York executive Angela (Rachel Nichols) is the last to leave her office before heading to New Jersey for a holiday with the family. Already late, she is dismayed to find that her car won’t start. The handsome, seemingly helpful garage attendant, Thomas (Wes Bentley), checks out the car for her, but to no avail. The next thing she knows, Angela wakes up in the garage office in a dress, chained to a chair, with a Christmas dinner laid out before her. Thomas has been watching her for a long time, and with everyone else gone for Christmas, he finally has her alone. Angela will have to fight with everything she has to make it through to Christmas morning. Under the first-time direction of co-screenwriter Khalfoun, P2 is a solid thriller that delivers ample action, despite being an amped-up two-person stage play. Nichols is an appealing heroine in a physically demanding role, while Bentley’s wacko Thomas never veers into cartoonishness. This isn’t one for the SAW crowd, though the two brief moments of splatter are certainly of that gross-out caliber. Vintage Christmas songs are also used to strong effect. Rotten Tomatoes

The Academy Award-winning producer and special-effects team behind The Lord of the Rings join with Revolution Studios & Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia) in adapting Dick King-Smith’s children’s novel “The Water Horse” into a fantasy film starring Alex Etel, Emily Watson, Ben Chaplin and David Moririssey. Based on the novel by BABE author Dick King-Smith, THE WATER HORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP is set in Scotland during World War II, and focuses on Angus (Alex Etel), a young boy who discovers an unusual egg at Loch Ness. When the egg hatches to reveal a dinosaur-like creature, Angus finds that he has a unique pet--a mythical "water horse," which he names Crusoe. Complicating matters are Crusoe's fast growth rate and soldiers stationed near the lake, factors that make it very tricky to keep the friendly beastie a secret. A thoroughly likable family film directed by Jay Russell (TUCK EVERLASTING), THE WATER HORSE provides an intriguing spin on the classic boy-and-his-dog tale. While Etel, who won over audiences in MILLIONS, ably carries the movie, he is supported by a topnotch ensemble that includes Emily Watson as his mother, newcomer Priyanka Xi as his sister, and Ben Chaplin as a good-natured handyman. Primarily sharing the screen with Etel, however, is the Loch Ness Monster-in-the-making, which is wonderfully rendered by Weta, the company behind the digital effects for THE LORD OF THE RINGS films. Both cute and--in his larger state--intimidating, Crusoe strikes up a surprisingly believable relationship with Angus, providing the heart of this beautifully photographed story. Rotten Tomatoes

Samuel L. Jackson plays an ex-policeman who is now a crime scene cleaner in this thriller by director Renny Harlin (“The Long Kiss Goodnight, Die Hard 2”). During one of his job , he is paid to clean a house before the crime is even reported to the police , and soon the owner of the house tracks him down wondering where her missing husband is, and before long there’s a big conspiracy opening up around them, Also starring Ed Harris and Eva Mendes.

Produced by and starring the great Samuel L. Jackson, Cleaner is a nail-biting new thriller that follows a tough professional crime-scene cleaner as he is sucked into a tangled web of corruption, deception and murder. A smart, taut crime story, Cleaner lays bare its characters’ psyches to reveal conflicting loyalties and deeply buried motivations. The film trades in the sparks flying between cast members: Jackson and Ed Harris go after each other like two prize fighters, the incredible Keke Palmer (Akeelah from Akeelah and the Bee) exudes warmth and need, and Eva Mendes is the embodiment of passion and grit.

Now that he’s retired from working the beat on Trenton’s mean streets, Tom Cutler (Jackson) scrubs blood out of New Jersey’s dens, kitchens and bedrooms for a living. A widower with a close relationship to his teenaged daughter, Rose (Palmer), Tom is sent on a routine call to a homicide scene in a tony neighbourhood and, as usual, does a perfect job cleaning up the mess. Returning the key the next day, he encounters the stunning Ann Norcut (Mendes). Tom is shocked to discover that Ann has no clue that her pristine walls had just yesterday been splattered with brain matter, so the cleaner plays dumb and leaves the oblivious woman in peace. Soon after, Tom finds out that Ann’s husband had been reported missing. Shooting the breeze with his buddy Eddie (Harris), who still serves on the force, he learns that Mr. Norcut was a key prosecution witness set to testify before the grand jury about the widespread corruption currently wracking the police department. The police start poking around Tom’s cleaning company – led there by the suspiciously high levels of industrial-strength disinfectants in the Norcut home – and we find out that Tom has a lot of secrets from his police days that could put him in serious danger of being set up by the crooked cops; secrets that Rose must not find out. As he seeks help from both Ann and Eddie, he finds that knowing whom he can trust is impossible.

Director Renny Harlin expertly leads Tom down Trenton P.D.’s dark spiral of lies and intrigue. Jackson is perfectly suited to the role of a haunted man hell-bent on redeeming himself in his daughter’s eyes; the film is ultimately about his struggle to make a clean break.
